A CONEX heat treatment control room conversion is a standard steel shipping container that has been rebuilt into a weatherproof, climate-controlled operator station for pre-weld and post-weld heat treatment. Instead of running power consoles and chart recorders off the back of a truck or out of a tarped-over lean-to, the entire control side of the heat treating spread lives inside one enclosed, transportable unit.

Where the term comes from

CONEX is short for "Container Express," a designation that traces back to U.S. military logistics. These days most people in the field use it loosely to mean any ISO intermodal container, usually a 20-foot or 40-foot box. A conversion is simply that container after it has been cut, insulated, wired, and fitted out for something other than hauling freight.

For heat treating work, what it gets fitted out with is the brain of the operation.

What goes inside

A finished control room is more than a box with a desk in it. A typical build includes:

  • Power consoles sized to the job, commonly in 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 zone configurations, with ramping controllers or manual control depending on the code requirements
  • Temperature recorders, since the certified time and temperature trace is usually the deliverable the client and the inspector actually care about
  • Thermocouple terminations and compensating cable panels feeding back from the joints
  • Incoming power distribution, breakers, and panelboards, often tied to a site generator
  • HVAC, insulation, and lighting, because transformers throw heat and recorders drift when the ambient swings hard
  • Racks, shelving, cabinets, and a real work surface for procedures, charts, and documentation

Put another way: the ceramic mat heaters and insulation wrapped around the pipe are the body. The container is the brain.

Why bother containerizing the controls?

Because PWHT is unforgiving on process control. Codes such as ASME B31.3, ASME Section I and VIII, and AWS D1.1 spell out heating rates, soak bands, hold times, and cooling rates, and they require documented proof that you hit them. A recorder that fails mid-soak or a console that trips from moisture ingress can cost you the joint. Re-treating a weld on a shutdown schedule is nobody's idea of a good afternoon.

Because job sites are hostile. Refineries, shipyards, power plants, and right-of-way work are dusty, wet, and either freezing or brutally hot. Sensitive electronics need a conditioned envelope, not a plastic sheet.

Because mobilization speed is money. The whole spread ships as one unit on a flatbed, gets set in place, and needs only a power tie-in and cable runs to the work front. On turnaround work measured in hours, that difference is real.

Because cable management gets ugly fast. A large campaign might run dozens of zones at once. Keeping every console, splitter, and thermocouple termination in one organized space keeps runs traceable back to specific joints, which is exactly what the QA package needs.

Because inspectors need somewhere to stand. Clients want to review charts, check procedures, and witness operations. A defined room supports that far better than a truck bed does.

20-foot or 40-foot?

It depends on zone count and whether you also need equipment storage. A 20-foot unit works well as a dedicated control station for moderate spreads. A 40-foot build gives you room to combine the control room with secure storage for heaters, cables, insulation, and spares, which is often the smarter buy when the unit will sit on one site for months.

What to ask before you commit

The container itself is the cheapest part of the package, so that is not where the questions should be. Ask instead:

  • How much console capacity is installed, and how many zones does it support?
  • Are the recorders calibrated and traceable?
  • Does the electrical build meet the area classification of your site?
  • Is the HVAC sized for full load in your worst-case ambient?
  • Who built the consoles, and can they support them five years from now?

That last one separates a fabricator who bought equipment and bolted it down from a manufacturer who builds the equipment in the first place.
